When will the Christmas tree be put up?
Most people put up the Christmas tree a few days before Christmas Eve. 27% put up their Christmas tree at the beginning of December, while 28% put up their Christmas tree in the middle of the month. Only 12% of the people put up their Christmas tree directly on Christmas Eve. (This is shown in the graphic above)
There used to be more tinsel
The graphic on the left shows that Christmas baubles and fairy lights are by far the most commonly used to decorate the Christmas tree. Angels, tinsel, Wooden Figures, Candles, Straw Stars, Straw Figures, ect. are also used very often. However, candy canes are only used by 18% of those surveyed for their Christmas tree. In the past, Christmas trees were decorated with dates, apples, nuts, paper flowers or straw stars.
On Christmas Eve, the children were allowed to shake the sweets from the tree and eat them. The first Christmas tree with candles was decorated by Duchess Dorothea Sibylle of Silesia in 1611. (Silesia was an area in present-day Poland).
Which Christmas tree do Germans buy?
About 80% of Germans buy the Nordmann fir. The Nordmann fir is very robust and lasts a long time. It doesn't needle muchand their needles arent sharp which is good for the little children so they wont get hurt. The tree also brings a pleasant scent into the room. Around 10% of Germans buy the blue spruce. Their sharp needles prevent the animals from playing or climbing up the Christmas tree. Otherwise, red spruce, noble fir or black pine are also very popular with the Germans. The Frankfurt Christmas tree from 2024 is a spruce from the Spessart. His name is Florian, he is 26 meters tall and they say that he is even one meter taller than the Christmas tree in New York.
