The troubles and Bloody Sunday

The Troubles

The troubles lasted for 30 years in Northern Ireland, it was scarred by a period of deadly sectarian violence.

It all kicked off at around 1968 and lasted till 1998 between protestant unionists who wanted to remain part of the UK and the Roman Catholic nationalists who wanted Northern Ireland to become part of the Republic of Ireland.

Republicans fought for independence by peaceful protests but an Irish republican army has formed named the IRA which is used violence and bombing to protest. 3600 were killed in the violence of the troubles with the IRA and the British army.

Many peaceful protesters were injured and killed in these times but the worst violence put on these protesters was on bloody Sunday. This was a protest against discrimination in housing and the B-specials.

Bloody Sunday

Bloody Sunday began as a peaceful but illegal demonstration by around 10.000 people by the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association.

These demonstrators marched towards the Guildhall Square in Derry city Centre.

Soldiers from the British Army tried to Cordon off as much as possible, so they rebelled by throwing stones at the army.

This happened on the 30th of January 1972.

The British army shot 26 unarmed Civilians during this demonstration

The Gaelic language

Gaelic is a fascinating and historic language with deep roots in Ireland. Gaelic, specifically the Irish language, traces its origins back to the Gaels, a people who spoke this language. The Gaels came from what is now North-Eastern Ulster, a northern province in Ireland, and their language spread from there in the fifth century. This makes Irish Gaelic one of the oldest and most historical languages in the world.

Irish Gaelic is a part of a larger family of Celtic languages. It's closely related to Scottish Gaelic and is also connected to other Celtic languages like Cornish, Welsh, and Breton. This relationship highlights a shared linguistic heritage across different Celtic regions. Despite its ancient origins, Irish Gaelic remains a living language today. It's widely available in various media, including: up to 4500 Books, on television, radio, and in newspapers and magazines and also in the internet.

Gaelic football

Gaelic football is a traditional Irish Sport. You have to get the ball into the goal or over the bar between the poles of the goal.
If you kick it into the goal you get 3 points and if you kick/ punch it over the bar you at l no only take four steps and then you must either solo or bounce the ball. A solo is when the player bounces the ball off their foot and back into their hands. Every year there is a competition with the 32 counties of Ireland and the winner is called the all Ireland champion.

Irish dance

Irish dance is an energetic tradition with a rich history that has captivated audiences worldwide. Its roots are connected with the social and cultural history of Ireland. The earliest forms of Irish dance were informal and communal, performed at social gatherings and celebrations.

The modern, structured form of Irish dance we know today began to take shape with the influence of traveling dance masters in the 18th and 19th centuries. These masters traveled from village to village, teaching basic steps and movements. It was during this time that the characteristic posture—with a stiff upper body and arms held straight at the sides—was established, contrasting with the rapid and characteristic footwork.

In the 20th century, a more formalized structure was created with the establishment of organizations that standardized competitions and promoted the dance. This helped to preserve Irish dance and spread its influence. However, it was the global success of theatrical shows like "Riverdance" in the 1990s that truly catapulted Irish dance onto the world stage.

Declaration of the German Grundgesetz 1949 / Verkündung des Grundgesetzes

On May 23, 1949, the Basic Law was proclaimed at a ceremonial meeting of the Parliamentary Council. This marked the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany. The 75th anniversary of the Basic Law was celebrated in 2024. The background was the failure of the Weimar Republic. The mothers and fathers of the Basic Law had set themselves the goal of giving the new Federal Republic a constitution whose focus was on the dignity of every single person. With Article 1, they deliberately placed what is probably the most important sentence of the Basic Law at the beginning: "Human dignity is inviolable. In doing so, they created directly applicable law for all state power.

----
