June 17th 1953
It was a fateful day for Germany. The construction workers of the Stalinallee in East Berlin made a statement with their strike. In more than 700 cities and communities of the DDR (GDR) it came on June 17th 1953 to a popular uprising. Approximately one million people participated in East Berlin and the DDR. On this day, over 600 factories turned a workers' protest into a popular uprising in a matter of hours. The socialist state crushed the uprising with the help of the Soviet army. For the first time, the population rose up against the communist system. The reasons were the same as for the reunification. Therefore, this day is still important today. The government reacted by crushing the uprising with the help of the Soviet army. The consequences of this uprising were 50 deaths and 10,000 arrests.

Es war ein Schicksalstag für Deutschland. Die Bauarbeiterinnen und Bauarbeiter der Stalinallee in Ost-Berlin setzten mit ihrem Streik ein Zeichen. In über 700 Städten und Gemeinden der DDR kam es deshalb am 17. Juni 1953 zu einem Volksaufstand. Rund eine Million Menschen waren in Ost-Berlin und in der DDR dabei. Über 600 Betriebe machten an diesem Tag aus einem Arbeiterprotest in wenigen Stunden einen Volksaufstand. Der sozialistische Staat schlug den Aufstand mit Hilfe der sowjetischen Armee nieder. Zum ersten Mal erhob sich die Bevölkerung gegen das kommunistische System. Die Gründe waren die gleichen wie bei der Wiedervereinigung. Deshalb ist dieser Tag auch heute noch wichtig. Die Regierung reagierte, indem sie den Aufstand mit Hilfe der sowjetischen Armee niederschlug. Die Folgen dieses Aufstandes waren 50 Tote und 10.000 Verhaftete.
