The Advent calendar – a German tradition:

The Advent calendar is a beloved German tradition used to count down the days from December 1st to Christmas eve (December 24th ). It typically features 24 compartments or “doors“ each hiding a small surprise that is revealed daily, such as chocolates, toys, or little things you like. The tradition began in 19th-century Germany as a way for families, particulary Protestants, to mark the advent season leading up to Christmas. Early versions included chalk marks, candles or devotional verses.

Modern advent calendars come in many forms, from simple designs with Christmas motifs to elaborate themed versions with luxury gifts. For children, it’s a source of daily excitement, while for adults, it’s a nostalgic and festive way to embrace the holiday spirit. The advent calendar has since spread worldwide but remains deeply rooted in German Christmas culture.
