Vanillekipferl: A Simple Recipe and Their History

Vanillekipferl, or vanilla crescent cookies, are a popular holiday treat in Central Europe. These cookies are buttery, soft, and shaped like little crescents. They are made with ground nuts like almonds or hazelnuts and covered in powdered sugar with a hint of vanilla. People in Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic often enjoy them Christmas, but they’re so delicious, you might want to bake them any time of year!

Where Vanillekipferl Come From

Vanillekipferl have a long history that goes back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Their crescent shape might have been inspired by the Ottoman Empire’s crescent moon symbol, showing the connection between the two regions in history. Over time, these cookies became really popular in Austria, especially in Vienna, which is famous for its baking traditions. Today, Vanillekipferl are well-loved in many countries and have become a symbol of Christmas and family traditions.


How to Make Vanillekipferl

Ingredients:


          250g (2 cups) all-purpose flour

          200g (1 cup) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

          100g (1/2 cup) sugar

          100g (1 cup) ground almonds or hazelnuts

          1 tsp vanilla extract

          Powdered sugar mixed with a little vanilla sugar for coating

Steps:

      1.   Mix the Dough:

Combine the flour, sugar, and ground nuts in a bowl. Add the butter and vanilla extract. Use your hands or a pastry cutter to mix it all together you have a smooth dough. Be careful not to overmix.

      2.   Chill the Dough:

Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and let it chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. This helps it firm up and makes it easier to work with.

      3.   Shape the Cookies:

Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Take small pieces of dough and roll them into little logs about 5 cm long. Curve each log into a crescent shape and place it on the baking sheet.

      4.   Bake the Cookies:

Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are just turning golden.

      5.   Add the Vanilla Sugar:

While the cookies are still warm, gently roll them in powdered sugar mixed with vanilla sugar. Be careful because the cookies are fragile when hot.

      6.   Let Them Cool:

Let the cookies cool completely, then store them in an airtight containers. They can last up to two weeks and actually taste even better after a day or two.
